A Few Points on Why Veterans Make Great Entrepreneurs

Mar 10, 2022

As a veteran-owned and operated business that actively recruits veterans for our restoration services franchise, VetCor is a big fan of the “vetrepreneur” site known as VETtoCEO.com. They’re a nonprofit organization that specializes in helping to transition military servicemembers to business ownership of their own. VETtoCEO’s co-founder is a gentleman named John Panaccione, a former Army officer and a paratrooper with the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, NC.

Back in January, Panaccione authored an article for Entrepreneur magazine that explains why veterans are cut out for the entrepreneurial lifestyle. VetCor is proud to feature some of these meaningful takeaways that should make you think about your own future – and why franchising might be the perfect vehicle to launch your own entrepreneurial journey.

Entrepreneurism Isn’t the “Easy Way Out”

What’s worth doing is worth doing for money. And while many of us as veterans have great ideas from time to time, that doesn’t automatically translate to overnight success. Good things take time, patience, and perseverance. Which, thankfully, military veterans know all too well. Entrepreneurship should never be considered the easy way out, but we’re not designed that way anyhow.

Your Uniform Isn’t a Loan Guarantee

Banks and other lending institutions build capital through the careful consideration of their loan portfolios, and they aren’t in the habit of betting on risky propositions. Bank funding to access capital necessary for financing an entrepreneurial future is supposed to be difficult. Thankfully, veterans can take advantage of many funding programs designed to meet our needs, but banks also aren’t the only game in town. VetCor is proud to work with alternate funding sources such as Guidant Financial and AllCap Funding.

Risk is Part of the Reward

The easy way out is to find a job and accept a paycheck working for someone else. It takes drive, motivation, and effort to own something of your own. And starting from scratch isn’t a high-probability success story. Entrepreneurism means a little risk now, but a lot of rewards later.

Your MOS is No Promise of Success

U.S. military veterans come with all sorts of specialized experience. But just because you were part of a tanker crew on an M1 Abrams doesn’t mean entrepreneurism will be a cakewalk in comparison. Whatever the challenge, it takes teamwork to succeed in fulfilling the mission. It works the same with business ownership of your own. And that’s why franchising stands out. It’s like having a corporate partner to watch your six at all times.

Veterans make good franchisees because they know about discipline and hard work. They have a sense of dedication and focus, as well as teamwork. And they’re used to working under pressure. You’ve become all of these things because of the training you received in the military. Wouldn’t you rather put it to use for yourself than someone else?
